With all the information and questions from the recent actual and proposed changes, we want to make sure school district and their personnel have the knowledge and ability to cut through the confusion and focus on how they can ensure their campuses do not discriminate based on sex, including how to properly investigate and address sexual harassment. In this session, the Equity Assistance Center will discuss the current requirements of Title IX to clear up concerns over what is required as opposed to what has been proposed but is not required at the present time. In 2023, USDOE's OCR proposed new, new, new rules for athletics. However, these rules are still only proposed. On these newly proposed regulations, OCR created a significant differentiation between the post-secondary world and the elementary and secondary education world. In 2022, the USDOE's OCR proposed new, new rules for Title IX with a focus on modifying the previous regulations regarding sexual harassment, among other items. These regulations included significant details about the actions Elementary and Secondary schools, in addition to post-secondary schools, must take to address allegations of Title IX sexual harassment. Department of Education's (USDOE) Office for Civil Rights (OCR) created new rules for Title IX that officially included sexual harassment, including sexual assault, as a violation of Title IX's requirement to not discriminate on the basis of sex. Classroom teachers, interventionists, literacy coaches, and administrators can use this framework to determine if writing curricula and/or programs are aligned with all the components of research-based writing instruction.Īre you a district Title IX coordinator, district administrator, athletic director, building principal or just interested in making sure your school or district does not discriminate based on sex?ĭoes it seem like the goal posts keep moving on this topic? Then, an overview of the five strands in The Writing Rope will be provided: 1) Critical Thinking (generating ideas and information, stages of the writing process), 2) Syntax (syntactic awareness, sentence elaboration, punctuation), 3) Text Structure (narrative, informational, opinion paragraph structure patterns of organization, 4) Writing Craft (awareness of task, audience, purpose use of mentor models word choice, 5) Transcription (spelling and handwriting fluency). The session will begin with a summary of the research on effective writing instruction across grades 3-12 with related resource links. These components are represented as strands in a rope in The Writing Rope framework (Sedita, 2019) that is the basis for this session. Many teachers do not recognize that evidence-based, effective writing instruction must address multiple components.
